The Science Behind Tides

Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun, and the rotation of the Earth.

Although the Sun's mass is much larger than the Moon's, the Moon is much closer to Earth, so its tidal force is about twice as strong as the Sun's.
